Ibuprofen and a heating pad are probably as effective as anything, but the cramps result from your uterus staying contracted to keep you from bleeding excessively as everything gradually returns to normal. If you breast feed you may notice increased cramping, and if you are seeing heavy bleeding and clots despite the cramping you should talk to your doctor.
