Hypochromia is translated to mean “low color.” This means there is less hemoglobin in your red blood cells. The finding is meaningful if the rest of your CBC shows low hemoglobin/hematocrit, a low MCV, and high RDW. This could suggest iron deficient anemia. An iron panel could also help with the diagnosis. All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, if your hemoglobin and ferritin levels are normal, it is not of concern. It may indicate iron deficiency. It may be useful to take oral iron supplement. Wish you good health!
