I was given dilaudid (1 mg per day / 1/2 of a 2mg) and taking it for two days now. i can't stop sleeping. is this normal? broken ribs and bone cancer here?

Yes, dilaudid has sedative effect so that could be the reason for your sleepiness. You are probably quite sensitive with this narcotic. You may ask your family doctor or oncologist changes to Norco or Fentanyl patch at low dose if NSAID (ibuprofen, naproxen ...) is not strong enough or it is contraindicated.
