HSV is extremely contagious, and once contracted is possible of transmission even without visible ulcerative lesions. Treatment can hasten resolution of active lesions (antivirals like acyclovir, Valtrex are very effective), however the virus exists inside the nucleus of cells, and cannot be eliminated completely.
