A member asked:

How likely is it to pass on anything, if i came back with hsv2 equivocal results after testing neg 4 months prior (1 new partner between test), if i want to be intimate with a new female partner, would she be at risk of anything? what if i take meds?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

HSV is extremely contagious, and once contracted is possible of transmission even without visible ulcerative lesions. Treatment can hasten resolution of active lesions (antivirals like acyclovir, Valtrex are very effective), however the virus exists inside the nucleus of cells, and cannot be eliminated completely.
