A member asked:

Hi, just a quick question. i understand if that people could have herpes without any symptoms, but if you have never had a cold sore or outbreak, would that mean you do not have oral herpes? do you have to take a blood test to make sure? thank you?

Many people have oral infections with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) but have no oral herpes outbreaks (cold sores). They do not frequently transmit the infection to others. Therefore, in most cases, there is no need to know they are infected and no need to test. Also, the blood test remains negative in 30% of people with HSV1, so a negative test doesn't mean someone isn't infected.
