Many people have oral infections with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) but have no oral herpes outbreaks (cold sores). They do not frequently transmit the infection to others. Therefore, in most cases, there is no need to know they are infected and no need to test. Also, the blood test remains negative in 30% of people with HSV1, so a negative test doesn't mean someone isn't infected.
