If you have sustained a forceful injury to your eye, get an exam with an eye MD in person. A hole can be made from the outside of the eye to the inside. The force necessary would vary by patient, location on the eye, sharpness of the poking object, the mass of the object, and the speed. A blunt force trauma can tear the retina on the inside. This also varies by patient. Don't poke your eye!

It would take microseconds for a sharp object with force to penetrate an eye. You maybe referring to a retinal tear which untreated can lead to retinal detachment and loss of vision. This happens with blunt trauma to the globe and can occur with a single blow or multiple as in boxing or martial arts training.
