Notalgia paresthetica occurs typically over a unilateral medial scapular area, and may present with a silver dollar sized area of numbness or itchiness. Small unmyelinated sensory nerves are afflicted locally causing a focal sensory neuropathy, usually left sided. On occasion, dermatological conditions cause the problem, but trauma may be an instigator.
