The discoloration and swelling, indicate one might have sprained it. The PCP should check it out and do some imaging if indicated, for appropriate treatment. But, the Foot doctor, Podiatrist should also be seen for evaluation if there is more to it.

If you don’t recall trauma, this can be an infection or an inflammatory condition, Please see your local Podiatrist. Undiagnosed neuropathy in combination with dry skin may be contributing factors for an infection while Gout is a common inflammatory joint condition. Your doctor may order bloodwork or even aspirate fluid from the joint to help make the diagnosis.
