A contact dermatitis is one possible cause. Discuss application of a topical calamine antihistamine lotion if the rash is itchy. Otherwise, calamine or aloe vera should soothe the skin. Keep the area clean and dry, watch for signs of infection. A virtual consult with Healthtap is available.

The association with hiking suggests a poison ivy type of dermatitis. Sometimes there is association bias and something totally different may account for the rash, not associated with the mentioned activity. Having the rash examined would be best, specifically if progressing.
