Inhaled air is supposed to be moistened by the mucous membrane covering the turbnates in the nose, when you mouth breath you dry out the membranes at the back of the throat which causes the mucous to thicken and may produce minor irritation and possible bleeding. The mouth breathing is an issue you should address.
