Smoke is made up of tiny particles and gases. During the fire, the gases and particles are thick in the air and can cause damage to your lungs within minutes. Once the fire is out and the windows are opened, most of the gases are dissipated. The particles, though come to rest on any surface and can be reintroduced to the air by any disturbance. These particles can cause continued irritation.
