86 year old male. which otc med is good to treat mild stridor infection. noise only comes out sometimes while sleeping. pcp suggested loratidine. chest x-ray is ok. ct shows mild swollen of throat due to possible allergies?

Since you only note the wheeze while sleeping, have no persistent hoarseness and the chest ct scan didn't show a tracheal tumor I suspect that you're dealing with a nonserious upper respiratory tract situation. Nevertheless I would like to have an evaluation and opinion from an otolaryngologist for diagnosis and treatment options.

Hello. I agree with the 2 imaging studies being negative, allergy or reactive airways are possible. If Stridor is “noisy breathing”, then snoring/sleep apnea could be present. An ENT evaluation will provide an endoscopic evaluation of the upper airway and since you asked about OTC medications, I would agree with the antihistamine but I’d also recommend saline rinse then follow with Flonase.
