Although outbreaks of HSV I are usually easily detectable, they may be infrequent and not cause concern. Testing revealing an IgG positive for HSV I simply has detected a prior presence of HSV I, not an active (IgM) presence of the virus. HSV I and II are very contagious and the chance of dormant viral presence with either, even without sexual contact, is possible.
