A member asked:

I have read that if you have 3 normal paps smears in a row, you can go every 5 years for a paps.. is this true? if so, would that catch cancer or would too much time have passed? dont uterine and cervical cancer spread quickly?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

If you are low risk, not immunocompromised, and you your last 3 paps have been normal, then it is ok to defer pap testing to every 5 years as long as you are also testing for HPV with the pap smear. Pap smears detect cervical cancer (predominantly caused by HPV), and it is very slow growing. Uterine cancer is a separate problem, not detected by pap smears. Report any abnormal bleeding to your GYN
