A member asked:

Why are admits done through er? if my doctor wants me admitted, why isn't there a system in place to check in at the hospital for admission? i understand triage, room assignments, etc, but it seems like it would save er resources to do a direct-admit?

Hospital beds are limited nowadays so patient needs to be checked at ER first to see if they meet criteria for admission. Direct admission is quite rare in the area I practice in the last 10 years unless for certain conditions such as transplant or chemotherapy services.

It may be the case that the ER needs to run tests rapidly before admission in order for the doctors in the hospital to properly treat you. There are some times doctors do directly admit patients but that is with more focused conditions where all the information is available before the admssion to make proper decesions. Speak to your doctor and ask
