Cellulitis of the digits, can be introduced at irritation sites along nails, and small injuries. This can cause pain and redness. Other possibilities include sprain/strain if there was trauma to the area, blisters/calluses due to repetitive work. Apply Ice to the area, and if the redness does not go away within 24 hours, have it evaluated by a Dr either on telemedicine or in person.

There are many causes of pain and redness to the finger. In your age bracket: infection, sprain, strain, contusion are all possibilities. Try treating with rest, elevation, ibuprofen or Tylenol. If it does not improve over the next 24-48 hours consult your primary care physician.
