Complications of arterial puncture are rare. The main one is blood leak resulting in bruise, usually prevented by keeping firm pressure on the puncture site for at least several minutes, sometimes up to an hour or so. If a bruise occurs, usually it clears up over a week or so.

Radial artery puncture is not usually followed by much bleeding if adequate pressure is applied for several minutes. Inadequate compression may result in a localized swelling requiring prolonged compression. The key to prevention of bleeding is the experience of the operator.
