A member asked:

Hi. 25 year old female. mri found a 6.6 cm ovarian cyst. is this likely to be cancer? i was told surgery will probably be needed for risk of rupture?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

If the ovarian cyst is shown to have complexities within the cyst, a biopsy is required to make sure of the cellular constituency. If the cyst is a simple follicular type (w/o complex structure), it may rupture spontaneously, and surgery is not usually necessary. Ask your gyn physician about low dose oral contraception, if appropriate, bcp's will reduce the likelihood of cyst recurrence.
