48 yr old male. a1c after summer sweet indulge went up to 6.4 from 6.1 five months ago . how to bring it down to atleast 6? pcp said keep it down below 6.9 even though 6.5 is officially diabetes. you dont start meds over 7.0 because of young age?

Levels between 5.7 and 6.4 indicate prediabetes. You should strive to get the A1c under 5.7 by adhering to a proper diet, attaining ideal weight and getting regular exercise. I don't recommend medication for prediabetes regardless of age.Seeing a dietician for a one time consultation is worthwhile. A normal A1C level is below 5.7%, a level of 5.7% to 6.4% indicates prediabetes. Losing about 10% body weight, exercising at least 150 minutes a week and consulting nutritionist about diet are imperative. If that does not help, it would be prudent to see a doctor and consider taking medication.
