I'm not exactly sure by the description, what the pain is related to; and also whether you had an injury. I would say if the pain bothers you enough, see your doctor and they will likely send you for x-rays and/or MRI of wrist. This can help determine if there is a fracture of one of your carpal bones, or if there is any problem with alignment. It can also give clues regarding arthritis.

Sounds like you have dequervains teonsynovitis a problem with the first extensor compartment and tendons for extending and abducting the thumb. Icing splinting and rest usually resolve it but can sometimes require a steroid injection, or possible surgical release

I agree with the above doctor's recommendation for at least the first 4 to 6 weeks of care; however prior to injections I would order and xray to rule out base of thumb or radiocarpal wrist arthritis. If the xrays are negative then I typically offer the tendinitis injections.
