It all depends on where you live. Majority of places tap water is decontaminated using physical and chemical methods, including chlorination in many places. Best place to ask would be your water supply company.

Tap water is freshwater. Municipal supplied water is predominantly safe. You need to check with your water company to find out the water treatment process they follow.
