Ovarian cancer like any cancer is caused by fast growing, unregulated cells that have been mutated to grow abnormally. Treatment involves removing the mass, radiation to kill the cells, and medications that can kill rapidly growing cells. A person can be in remission from cancer when there is no known focus of abnormally growing cells. Unfortunately, cells can escape the treatment and grow later.

Ovarian cancer, like many other cancers may respond to surgery and chemotherapy. However, a few cancer cells may survive the treatment and regrow. A person may go through more than one remission, yet still have residual cancer in the body.
