Keratosis pilaris (KP) is usually asymptomatic. However, it is often seen in association with atopic dermatitis so itching may be present. Excessive dry skin (xerosis) may exacerbate KP and itching is also common in xerosis. KP is thought to be a genetic disorder of keratinization that results in the formation of horny plugs in the hair follicle orifices so clogged follicles do not cause itch.
