Was an x-ray taken? It could be a piece of bone that became loose or you could have irritated the area by biting on a sharp bone or nut. Keep looking at the area and get an x-ray if one wasn't done.

Standard of Care is that any lesion lasting longer than 2 weeks deserves investigation. You were right to see a Dentist. As (S)he found nothing of concern, it would now be prudent to have further investigation done by an Oral Surgeon. Therehasn to be an explanation, a cause for the lesion.
