It could be a contusion and/or a sprain, but a blood clot so soon doesn't sound likely. I think he should be examined ASAP by the vascular surgeon in any event. In the meantime I agree with the use of icing and elevation of the leg.

Agree with Dr Colantino. Another possibility could be a hematoma from a damaged blood vessel, which may or may not be related to the bypass surgery, but the surgeon needs to know about it
