no a complete exam with dilation is necessary often with scleral depression is necessary

The gold standard is a dilated retinal exam. If you don't have any risk factors and you don't have any symptoms, it may be possible to give you an adequate exam without dilation especially if they have a non-mydriatic widefield camera. However, is you have any symptoms or risk factors you definitely should be dilated.
