A member asked:

My parents are talking about surgery for my l5 and l4 because they are pushing on my nerves and i have pain in both legs down to my ankles, would surgery be worth it and help?

You are better of talking with the doctor that made the diagnosis along with the doctor that would do the surgery to have them explain to you why they would consider surgery and the pros and cons of the surgery is also an obligation they have. Surgery is not always a miracle cure, you could also have them explain other options and have your parents help you make the best decision.

Would do anything to avoid back surgery at age 17, and have no clue why there is a push toward this potentially risky plan. If you have ruptured or protruded discs, and there is no bladder, or muscle atrophy issue, you could wait several months as discs desiccate and shrink over time. Would recommend a neurosurgical consult at your nearest medical school. In meantime, do physical therapy.

Do not rush into surgery at your age. xI would do minimum of 6 months of physical therapy where you RELIGIOUSLY DO YOUR EXERCISES at home. If this is not helpful, look into eversion tables that stretch you upside down to pull your spine open as you are lying down. Surgery is not a cure all, and could lead to problems your entire adult life, problems with pregnancy, etc. Try to AVOID surgery!
