No necessarily: You need to see you Dr. New onset weakness can indicate that there is nerve impingement and inflammation in the area of the herniation. The Dr who ordered the imaging study should be able to advise you on a proper course of treatment now that you have symptoms. Surgery may be one of the options, but they may also suggest anti-inflammatories (oral or injected) as well as physical therapy.
