Does masks work on protecting us from covid? some sources say that even if masks are worn, it won't block droplets. is that true? if we go to a store or kids going back to school, everyone is at a really high risk even wearing masks?

Yes, most masks are relatively worthless as cloth and paper will not block viral particles, airborne via droplets, as the virus is far too small. An N-95 respirator is far more protective but expensive and hard to find. Face shields would provide excellent protection in concert with the N-95.
