If your Gardner is positive then you should get tested and quarantine for 10 days. Your children should report exposure so school can do the testing and follow their guidelines. If your gardener is negative, then you need not consider exposure. You should quarantine if gardner is waiting on test results. Hope it helps.

Contact of a contact has very little risk of exposure,if you only spoke to your gardener for a few minutes,if both of you were masked, and if that day was the only day he was around the person who was positive. The incubation period is 2-14 days, so he would not have been contagious from that person in that case. However, if you have symptoms,or if he is + get tested.Son can go to school.
