Overexertion of a muscle group can cause strains or small tears. The standard treatment is Rest (no exercise, stretching or lifting for as long as it is hurting), Ice (20 minutes 2-3 times per day). To avoid injury, take measures to slowly increase your exercise regimen, since rapid increases often cause small injuries. Take Ibuprofen for pain and to relieve inflammation.
