I went to the dentist to get my braces adjusted and she informed me that one of the colored pieces (i don't know the exact name) fell out. it's possible that i swallowed it. is this something to be worried about?

It's an elastic plastic tie, an Alastic, that holds the wire into the bracket. As they say, "This too shall pass." Usually not of consequence.

No reason at all to be worried. These pieces are so small that they easily pass through your GI tract and you'll poop it out and likely not even know it. This too shall pass!!
