Muscle cramps are quite common in otherwise healthy people. Excessive exercise in an unconditioned individual or electrolyte imbalance from any cause can also cause cramps but the role of calcium is not that well described unless the level is extremely low which is uncommon but it happens if the parathyroid glands are accidentally removed during thyroid surgery.
