Gastroenteritis is caused by an infection in the intestines/stomach. Virus or bacteria can enter with food or drinks and causes discomfort for 3-7 days. The diarrhea is your body's way of expelling the virus/bacteria. Reinfection can occur many times, so be careful to wash your hands before you eat and always eat food prepared in sterile, clean kitchens.

The “stomach bug” is made of a variety of viruses and bacteria that can cause gastroenteritis, majority of which can recontaminate, as some infections do not offer lifelong immunity. While some individuals never develop an infection with a specific bug, some others experience reinfections or remain with chronic symptoms after an infection.
