A rabies exposure occurs when the saliva from a rabid animal gets into an open wound on the skin of a human. This is primarily through bites. Rabies is very sensitive to air and will die almost immediately upon contact with air. Therefore, having any rabid animal just brush against you cannot transmit rabies.
