Lymph nodes are collecting areas within the lymphatic system for all manner of immune cells and antibodies. If there is a malignancy or infection, the lymph nodes nearest the site will become inflamed. If the infection is extensive or there is a malignancy, there may be involvement of further away lymph nodes.
