Yes. Every individual has a specific point where an external stimulus or internal problem causes pain to be registered by the brain. It varies with each individual depending on their age (older persons more tolerant of pain), gender (women are typically more tolerant of pain) and culture. (these differences are thought to be related to stoicism)

My colleagues address the variability of pain tolerance, and there are those who can manage severe pain with tylenol, and others who have total intolerance of minor strain/ sprains secondary to recreational activities. No two cases are alike, and this highlights to need for doctors to deal with the "art of medicine".
