The length of time in which the rabies virus can live on surfaces depends on the conditions. The virus is very susceptible to heat and sunlight, so on hot surfaces or those exposed to the sun, the virus would only survive a short time, roughly 10 to 20 minutes. According to the Center for Disease Control, if the material holding the virus is dry, the virus cannot cause infection.
