With irregular menses, and pregnancy without confirmation of ovulation, ultrasound if the HCG test is positive can provide some confirmation of pregnancy dating by presence of yolk sac or early fetal heartbeat. Followup ultrasound and fetal size estimates, plus quantitative HCG levels should reassure subsequently if pregnancy occurs.
