Usually a dose or two of IV adntibiotic around the time of surgery, that's all. The purpose is to prevent infection introduced during surgery, and more prolonged treatment usually isn't needed unless an actual infection develops. If in doubt, discuss with the surgeon.

Antibiotics are given by IV starting less than 1 hour before surgery. Some antibiotics are infused in slower and are started about 2 hours before surgery. Some surgeons continue them after surgery for about 23 hours. However with more knee replacements being done on an outpatient basis sometimes antibiotics are not given after surgery.
