Longterm use of antidepressants has been listed as a cause of dementia. It is difficult to know if a patient can come off chronic antidepressant medications as there is a concern about relapse of depression. This is why it's advisable to be treated by trained and experienced mental health professionals when dealing with depression.

The sole evidence comes from epidemiological studies which do not properly sort out fact that depression is often the first sign of Alzheimer's disease. Am skeptical that Pristiq will cause brain damage resulting in permanent cognitive problems, but in some cases, cognitive issues may be a transient adverse effect, which departs as of cessation.
