The usual surgical indications involve intractable pain, unstable spine, progressive muscular weakness and atrophy, bladder dysfnctn. Many ruptured discs appear to desiccate and shrink if 8-9 months pass without additional damage. An epidural injection might decrease symptoms. A second opinion may be needed.

Surgery might help pain radiating down the legs but would not say that the surgery is necessary.
