Arthritis: Depending on where the swelling is and absent any trauma or infection, it sounds as though you may have developed some arthritis in the joint of the thumb. If it is near the wrist junction or the joint just above that area, it is most likely arthritis. You can see your pcp or an orthopedist of orhtopedist specializing in hands. You can be helped. Arthritis: Arthritis at the base of the thumb can give the problems you describe. An x-ray is helpful to see it. It is well treated by a brace for milder cases, surgery for more severe cases.
