Hand surgeon: I recommend that you consult a hand surgeon for diagnosis and treatment. It is possible that you have had bone, joint or ligament damage and it's important not to end up with chronic thumb problems which can happen if the damage is not diagnosed or treated properly.

A LtlleThummeryBelow: How did you injure that thumb? Where's the lump?? If it's at the base of the thumb, then you might need it to be splinted, probably x-rayed too. The thumb's a pretty important little digit. Get it looked-at so you don't develop some long-term problem!

May have a fracture: This may have been a fracture and the lump is the healing of the fracture. How long has it been? The X-rays by your physician should clarify this. Please get these X-rays to be certain there is no long term damage. The loss of function of the thumb is worrisome
