Doxycycline is a very safe and commonly used medication when acne requires an oral antibiotic. Other measures that may reduce the need for an oral antibiotic are a non-irritating soap, topical benzoyl peroxide and sometimes the use of a topical antibiotic like Cleocin. Oral doxycycline can be used once or twice daily if the above measures have been unsuccessful.

Doxycycline is often prescribed for various infections and inflammatory conditions. Most people do not experience significant side effects. The potential ocular reactions are light sensitivity and very rarely elevated pressure in the brain. Headaches, double vision, dizziness, or nausea/vomiting should prompt an eye exam to evaluate the optic nerve. Timely intervention could prevent vision loss.
