For treatment of typical acne, over-the-counter 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gel or cream can be quite helpful. An "acne wash" is not needed. If desired, a doctor can add an antibiotic gel or cream such as clindamycin gel. If more help is needed, prescription retinoids such as Retin-A or Differin gel may be used instead of benzoyl peroxide. It can take 3 weeks to 3 months in order to see improvements.
