It is not uncommon people feel that. It is called neck crepitus which is thought to occur when structures in the spine rub together and make sounds. It is almost the same sound when you bend your knee or finger joints.

Not sure why but if one has recently had a head/neck trauma, -by Accident/Sports/Games- there may be some instability of neck vertebrae. Will be a very good idea to go to the ER for X-rays etc, etc or see the PCP soonest.
