If it happens acutely along with bowel obstruction, bowel rest with nothing to eat (NPO) + intermittent nasogastric suction. If it is a chronic condition, diet change (some foods such as bean produce a lot of gas) and take medication such as simethicone (Gas-X) or charcoal tablet.

I agree with Dr.Le. Gaseous distension can be from too many gassy foods&beverages in which case dietary measures&Simethicone after meals help. It can also be due to normal amounts of gas that passes too sluggishly through the GI tract Here drinking hot water & applying heat to the abdomen offers relief in breaking up the gas & getting it to& through the rectum which is the proper way to expel it
