Much more will be needed for a specific answer. Epilepsy consists of a spectrum of conditions and the exact subtype along with fine details regarding previous treatment, tests, such as EEG’ s will be needed. The good news is that there are many newer anticonvulsant meds and more and more options for treatment. Your neurologist/ movement disorder specialist remains your best resource.

Barbiturates are very effective for epilepsy control, but due to tolerance, withdrawal risk associated with habituation/ addiction, now rarely used in USA. There are over 25 anti-epileptic drugs now available, and choosing new drug should be explored with your neurologist. Unfortunately, tapering off a barbiturate will be difficult at best, with risk of secondary seizure.
