An NIH study showed that a significant reduction of nocturnal cortisol excretion following quetiapine reflects a decreased activity of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal-axis in healthy subjects. This may actually be the cause of many of the neuroendocrine side effects seen with this medication.
